This article shows the problems of the European integration model. These problems
stem from the basic principles of the political science, which made the European political leaders disinterested in the observance of the Maastricht criteria. In the less competitive countries of the Eurozone periphery observance of the criteria would mean
fiscal restraints and wage deflation. In highly competitive countries in the core of the
Eurozone observance of the criteria would mean that the demand for their products
from periphery economies would decrease reducing economic growth and increa-
sing unemployment in these well-developed economies too. This is why political leaders will always choose the easier way automatically causing serious problems in long
term.
